Our Story
a melbourne icon
100 years in the making
American Tailors was established in 1950 - a time when all things American were seen as progressive, luxurious and stylish to Australians. The current building (in the same location) is all that is left of the once thriving industry of tailors and craftsmen that were employed making clothing for the men of Melbourne and beyond. If you needed a suit in Melbourne in the 50’s and 60’s - chances were you bought it from American Tailors, and their tailors worked in a network of spaces above and behind shops at the top of Bourke Street.
In the late 90’s, the son of the original owner, sold the business to the current owners - Tony Ranieri & Sebastian Giacobello, and new life was breathed into the once great store. The space was renovated, new stock was sourced from the finest suppliers in Europe & the UK, and they brought their extensive knowledge of fit and passion for quality to a new public.
Both Tony & Sebastian have a long history of selling and sourcing mens fashion and lifestyle products, having worked in the Melbourne high-end menswear scenes for most of their lives. They are both passionate about the benefits of quality in making one feel and look one’s best, but also in having and caring for products that last for a very long time.
In their time as the custodians of 68 Bourke Street, they have welcomed a huge number of customers, from the most humble (but quality focused) individuals, to sportsmen, prime-ministers, socialites, artists and international entertainers. The stories these walls could tell!
Today, you will receive the same care, attention to detail and fit that American Tailors was famous for when it first opened, but with the addition of a hand-picked range of European labels, that ensures you’ll walk out feeling and looking incredible. And yes, there are still tailors - working away upstairs, making bespoke wear for the people of Melbourne and repairing loved garments to ensure longevity.
